This area is showing a lot of potential - many interesting and interconnected trails through relatively remote areas. Looking forward to doing some overnight trips in October when I return to Chiang Mai. This year I'll be bringing some overnight gear from America, although some of what I have is not suited for tropical climates...

[...] This hike will have many of the characteristics that I enjoy on our other ‘roller coaster hike’ the 3 peaks hike behind Doi Langka Luang. We will be walking along mountain ridges and enjoy some of the best views of the Pui Suthep National Park. It will also be a tough hike even for those who are quite fit.
Jamie, do you think this survivor of the recent Doi Lanka Noi hike would slow you down too much on this hike?
(I also did the full Pilgrims Trail, Wat Fai Hin to Big Bend just below Wat Doi Suthep) there and back in 2hrs 45 mins on Tuesday. The Wat Palad to WDS section is pretty steep too, eh?)
Can't decide - roller coaster or Ob Luang.

I've been up to the peak of Doi Pah Hom Bok. If you can make it up the partially paved steep road up to the camp ground near the top then it is only I think a 4-5 km stroll to the top.

I would be interested if there is a longer trail. I did read that there might be a trail from the park entrance.

I think an earlier start would have been better. Didn't talk to anyone who had problems getting up early due to hangover. By the time we reached Wat Doi Suthep, there were so many buses & tourists. It was horrendous, too much exhaust fumes, crowds. We turned back as soon as we reached the car park area, & headed back into the jungle. Also, a morning start, say 9am, would have meant a cooler ascent. Enjoyed the hike, & 6 yr old Alexander had a great time, once he overcame his usual shyness. Hope to bring 2 yr old Peter along next week :)

My first hike (bushwalk in Australian) in Thailand. Reading the description above, I conclude we probably 'took the scenic route' (i.e. became slightly lost!), as I have no recollection of an orchard at all, and the 5 hours of course worked out to be very near 7!
I found the initial 3 hour climb very hard work (just shows how decrepit I've become), and to need every drop of my 1.5l water.
I thoroughly enoyed both the hike and the stimulating company.
Congratulations to the organisers for a super (but stretching) day.

Hi Mitch,

If I was in town I might of come with you, it is a great hike.

Driving instructions good enough to be sure you would not get lost and then instructions about how to follow the trail would take quite some work. You don't have a gps?

PS
Bring swimming costume and Towel.
The lake is really nice to swim in at this time of the year.
Perfect temperature after a walk.

Directions to Huay Tung Tao Lake from the Arboretum car park near CM zoo.

Journey time 20 minutes
Out of car park turn right heading back into town.
First big set of traffic lights (121) turn left (Dunkin Donuts on right) along Canal Road (big canal beside the road) for about 5Km (well past 700 year stadium). Plenty of signs in English 'Huay Tung Tao' along the way.
Turn left at the new temple, drive 1km until you get to the ticket office (20bht per person), past ticket office to T junction, turn left, drive 500m until you reach the big car park with the standing Buddha. Park m/c behind Buddha. Where you will find me!
