Sunday 10th July 2011, Hike Through Huay Gaew Waterfall to 5 Way Junction and Wat Doi Suthep
We will meet for an 8.15 am start at the arboretum This is a circular hike of about 14 km. taking 4 1/2-5 hours to complete. Difficulty is moderate
We will walk up alongside Huay Gaew, cross the road at Pa Nguep, and continue up a fairly steep track which crosses water and a narrow foot bridge over a deep chasm. Farther up we will turn off this dirt track on to a narrow path which is usually rather overgrown and obstructed with fallen trees. This will lead us out to another stream crossing and into a lychee orchard. After another 1/2 hour, if we don’t spend too much time eating lychees, we will reach the 5-way junction for a late breakfast stop. From here we work our way along the now familiar trail which comes out at Wat Pratat, Doi Suthep, and catch a red songtao back to the arboretum. Prepare for the possibility of leeches and getting wet and muddy.
Bring around 1.5-2 liters of water or more and snacks. Good footwear etc. hat, mozzie repellant, sunblock and rain gear. If by chance it is raining, about to rain or has been raining heavily overnight, the hike will be cancelled.
The arboretum located just before the Chiang Mai Zoo: see map
