Seven of us met at the Arboretum and at 08:15 we all piled into Andy’s car for the trip up to Ban Doi Pui. We began the hike at an altitude of 1,251 metres and went through cool shaded forest for much of the trail. We noted more than usual motorcyclists. We scaled Doi Pa Kha using the fire break route which was quite steep but more direct than the usual footpath. At the summit we were 1,523 metres high. The air was less polluted than down in the city. We came down from the summit using the easier, more leisurely, footpath. In a short gentle uphill hike we reached the viewpoint and were surprised to find a fire burning. After a short rest for snacks and drink we returned downhill and began the trail back to Ban Doi Pui. At the firebreak which is our usual uphill trail to Doi Pui we found several of the motorcyclists who had been passing and re-passing us and there were fires burning along the visible length of the firebreak. They told us the fires were to control the undergrowth! This was on a day when Chiang Mai was having very bad pollution! We had lunch in a restaurant in Ban Doi Pui and then returned by car to the Arboretum. Seven of us met at the Arboretum and at 08:15 we all piled into Andy’s car for the trip up to Ban Doi Pui.
